What the chase needs
Required run rate is the runs still needed divided by the overs still available. The table underneath shows how it moves if the next few overs are maidens, which is the number commentators mean when they say the rate is "climbing".
The bit the number hides
Required run rate says nothing about wickets in hand, and that is the whole game. Eight down needing seven an over is a different match from two down needing nine. Read it with the wickets column, always.
