How net run rate works

Net run rate is the average runs a team scores per over across a tournament, minus the average it concedes per over. It is the standard tiebreaker in every ICC group stage and in the IPL, and it decides more qualifications than most people realise.

The two traps

A side bowled out before its overs are up is charged the full allocation, not the overs it actually faced. Tick the box above and this calculator applies that automatically. A chase that finishes early counts only the overs actually used, which is why a fast win moves net run rate so much.

Overs are entered in cricket notation: 149.4 means 149 overs and 4 balls, which is 149.667 in decimal. The calculator converts for you.
