Runs divided by dismissals, not innings

This is the part that trips people up. A batting average is total runs divided by the number of times the batter was out, not by innings played. Not-outs are subtracted from innings before the division.

Why that matters

A number seven who is regularly stranded not out will carry an average well above what their scores suggest, and a specialist finisher can post a career average that flatters them for exactly this reason. It is also why an average alone never settles an argument: read it next to strike rate and the number of innings.

If every innings ended not out, the average is undefined rather than infinite, and this calculator says so.
