Economy rate

Economy rate, plainly

Economy rate is runs conceded per over bowled. Enter overs in cricket notation — 9.3 means nine overs and three balls — and the calculator converts it before dividing.

Part overs are where people go wrong

Nine point three overs is not 9.3 overs of arithmetic. It is 9.5 overs, because there are six balls in an over and three of them is a half. Getting this wrong inflates or deflates every figure you calculate by hand, and it is the single most common mistake in club scorebooks.

Wides and no-balls count as runs conceded but do not count as balls bowled, which is why a scrappy over can hurt an economy rate twice.
