What DLS actually does

Duckworth-Lewis-Stern treats a batting innings as a stock of two resources: overs remaining and wickets in hand. Every team starts with 100 percent of them. When rain shortens an innings, the method compares how much of that stock each side had, and adjusts the target in proportion.

Why a side chasing 34 overs is not chasing 68 percent

Resources are not linear in overs, because wickets matter more as overs shrink. A team with all ten wickets and 34 overs holds far more than two thirds of a full innings, which is why revised targets so often look harsh on the chasing side. They are not; the arithmetic simply refuses to pretend that ten wickets and 34 overs is the same as four wickets and 34 overs.

Why this page is an estimate

The official method uses a licensed resource table and, in professional cricket, the Stern refinement for very high scores. What runs above is a coarse interpolation that shows the shape of the calculation. It is here to explain the method, not to replace it.
