Left-right batting pairs, and why bowling sides hate them

Every single a left-right pair takes mirrors the whole field and moves the bowler's line by a stump and a half. It costs the fielding side; it costs the batters nothing.

Two batters at the crease, one left-handed and one right-handed, is one of the oldest and least discussed advantages in cricket. It costs the batting side nothing at all and it makes the fielding captain's job measurably harder every time the strike rotates.

Why a single changes everything

The batters take one run. The fielding side has to rearrange nine people and a plan.

Fielding positions are named relative to the batter's stance, not to the ground. Cover is on the off side, and the off side is wherever the striker's bat is.

So when a right-hander takes a single and a left-hander comes on strike, cover has become midwicket without moving. The slips are on the wrong side of the keeper. The sweeper protecting the short square boundary is now protecting nothing at all, because the boundary that was square is now behind the wicket.

Nothing about the ground has changed. Everything about the field has.

What the captain actually has to do

A full mirror is impossible between deliveries — there is not time, and the over rate is being counted. So captains move two or three fielders, accept that the rest are approximately placed, and correct properly at the end of the over.

The three that usually move are the ones protecting the boundary the new batter scores to, the catcher, and whichever fielder is now standing in a position that does not exist for this batter.

The rest stay, which means for at least a few deliveries the field is a compromise built for the previous batter. That is the actual advantage, and it is small, repeated and cumulative.

What it does to the bowler

The bowler's problem is more precise and less discussed.

A right-arm bowler going over the wicket to a right-hander is angling the ball across them, aiming at a fourth-stump line. The same delivery to a left-hander is angling in at leg stump, which is a bad ball. To bowl the equivalent delivery, the bowler either changes their line by a stump and a half or goes round the wicket.

Doing that every second ball is where the errors come from. Not one terrible delivery, but a steady rate of half-adjustments: slightly too straight to the left-hander, slightly too wide to the right-hander, and a batting side collecting a boundary an over from deliveries the bowler would normally not have bowled.

The spinner's version is worse. An off-spinner turning the ball into a right-hander is turning it away from a left-hander, which is a completely different delivery with a different field and a different plan. Sides with one front-line spinner find left-right pairs genuinely difficult.

The rough, which is the counter-argument

The one thing that runs the other way is the footmarks.

A right-arm-over bowler lands their front foot in a patch outside a left-hander's off stump. By day three of a Test that patch is rough, and a right-arm off-spinner bowling round the wicket into it is a serious problem for a left-hander with no equivalent problem for their partner.

So a left-right pair is a clear advantage in white-ball cricket and a mixed one in a long match. On day one it is all upside. On day four, against a spinner with rough to aim at, the left-hander in the pair is the one under pressure and the partnership is being broken at one end rather than both.

How sides use it

Batting sides protect the pair. A set left-right partnership will take singles that a same-handed pair would decline, specifically to keep the rotation going, and a side losing a wicket will occasionally promote a batter of the opposite hand to restore it.

Bowling sides try to break it. Bowling to keep one batter on strike — a tactic as old as the sport — is worth more against a left-right pair than against any other, because ending the rotation removes the whole problem.

Selectors build for it. A batting order with left-handers at two, four and six is not an accident. It maximises the number of partnerships that are mixed and minimises the number of overs a bowling side gets to settle into a single line.

A right-arm-over bowler is bowling a good fourth-stump line to a right-handed batter. The batter takes a single and a left-hander is now on strike. Without changing anything, where does that same delivery now land?

Where it matters most

The advantage is not evenly distributed across the innings.

In a T20 middle overs it is at its largest. The bowling side is trying to squeeze, the field is the containment tool, and a field that is a compromise for two balls of every over is a leak the captain cannot close.

Against a single specialist spinner it is large again, because the bowler cannot bowl the same delivery to both ends and has no colleague to hand the problem to.

On the first morning of a Test it is close to worthless. The bowlers are bowling one line at the stumps with a slip cordon, the field barely changes between batters, and nothing about the rotation helps.

In a run chase with a set batter it is negative, because the priority is getting the good player on strike rather than rotating away from them.

Why it is not a bigger deal than it is

Two honest limits.

Good bowlers adjust. A professional changing line by a stump and a half is doing something they have practised thousands of times, and the best of them do not leak runs for it. The advantage is real and it is measured in a handful of runs an innings, not in wickets.

And it is available to only some sides. You cannot manufacture a left-hander in the middle order without picking one, and picking a batter for their handedness over their ability is how sides lose matches in a more direct way.
