Opting to bat first after winning the toss at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) ground, India faced immediate challenges against a disciplined Sri Lankan pace attack.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul safely navigated the initial overs, adding 37 runs for the opening stand. Lahiru Kumara removed Rahul for 18, safely caught behind by Niroshan Dickwella to deal India the first blow of the morning.

Jaiswal looked aggressive and confident at the other end, striking nine boundaries in a brisk 45 before an excellent delivery from Asitha Fernando shattered his stumps.

Captain Shubman Gill and Devdutt Padikkal then orchestrated a brilliant recovery, keeping the hosts at bay with a watchful yet decisive 120-run partnership for the third wicket.

Showing immense patience, the duo weathered probing spells from the pacers and the left-arm spin of Prabath Jayasuriya. Gill, leading by example, brought up a composed half-century in 108 balls, anchoring the innings with a blend of solid defence and calculated aggression. His resilient knock was eventually ended by Fernando, caught behind on the stroke of Tea for 50.
