Jordan Cox struck a double century before Essex enforced the follow-on to take control of their Rothesay County Championship clash with Leicestershire at Grace Road.
Essex resumed at 342-5, and Cox – who has been called into England’s squad for the second Test against New Zealand – added 20 to his overnight 184 before he was caught behind off Josh Davey, having hit 26 fours and two sixes from his 201-ball innings.
Another England call-up, Rehan Ahmed, finished with four wickets as Essex were bowled out for 401 before then making a quick breakthrough with the ball.
Simon Harmer and Charlie Bennett both took three wickets as Leicestershire were 187 all out, Nick Kelly making 78, before reaching 51 without loss in their second innings, still trailing by 163.
Somerset captain Lewis Gregory took four wickets and Jack Leach three to peg back Division One leaders Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.
Archie Vaughan finished unbeaten on 66 as the visitors, resuming at 295-7, were all out for 310, Australian bowler Fergus O’Neill having taken 6-72.
Gregory then struck to remove Notts captain Haseeb Hameed for a four-ball duck and also had fellow opener Ben Slater trapped lbw for one. Haynes’ half-century (57) helped the home side on to 193 all out.
Somerset were 73-2 through 21 overs at the close after 40 from opener Jordan Hermann, to lead by 190.
James Coles crafted an unbeaten double century as Sussex built a commanding lead over Glamorgan at Hove.
Resuming at 136-2 in reply to Glamorgan’s 155, opener Daniel Hughes, 48 overnight, made 72 as Coles pushed the home side on, finishing on 224 with 22 boundaries and 11 sixes as Sussex were eventually 521 all out.
Glamorgan had made 42-0 through 12 overs at stumps, trailing Sussex by 324 runs.
At Scarborough, Yorkshire looked to defend a first-innings lead against Warwickshire, who still trail by 244 runs.
Jonny Bairstow, 49 overnight, had reached his half-century with 68 as Yorkshire, resuming on 386-6, were 469 all out.
Warwickshire opener Rob Yates made 65 and captain Ed Barnard was unbeaten on 60 in their 225-7 as Jack White claimed three wickets.
Durham seamers rip through Derbyshire
In Division Two, leaders Durham saw England captain Ben Stokes back training at the Riverside, where the home side forced Derbyshire to follow on.
Durham had resumed at 302-7, with Ben Raine’s determined 63 pushing them on to 377 all out. Ben Aitchison finished with 5-74.
The hosts then ripped through Derbyshire’s batters inside 30 overs, crumbling to 118 all out, Caleb Jewell offering some resistance with 37. Kasey Aldridge took his own five-for, while Raine also claimed three wickets.
Matthew Potts then picked up 4-32 in 11 overs to leave the visitors 99-4 at stumps, 160 behind, with opener Harry Came 48 not out. Potts has now passed 250 first-class wickets for his county.
Northamptonshire made 465 in their first innings against Gloucestershire, with James Sales and tailender Liam Guthrie both adding valuable half-centuries. Kristian Clarke finished with six wickets.
In reply, Gloucestershire were 233-5 through 72 overs after Graeme van Buuren made a resolute 75 not out to add to 72 from James Bracey.
Lancashire saw their first innings collapse to 87 all out against Kent as paceman Keith Dudgeon returned figures of 6-21 in a blistering 12-over spell.
Kent – who were themselves dismissed for 178 on the opening day – then reached 320-8, on the back of 101 from Chris Benjamin and opener Harry Finch making 83.
Middlesex lead Worcestershire by 79 runs at New Road.
The visitors had made 339, Seb Morgan finishing 58 not out. Toby Roland-Jones then took four wickets as Worcestershire were dismissed for 265, Matthew Waite making 69. At close, Middlesex were five without loss.
