INDIA TOUR OF ENGLAND, 2025

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant registered centuries in the first innings of the Leeds Test

Rishabh Pant: 134 (178)

7 – Test hundreds for Pant in 76 innings, the most by a designated wicketkeeper for India in Test cricket surpassing MS Dhoni’s six (in 144 innings). This was Pant’s third Test century in England equalling the most by a designated wicketkeeper in an away country alongside Les Ames in West Indies and Andy Flower in India.

3 – This was the third instance of Pant reaching his Test century with a six, all three off English spinners (Adil Rashid at the Oval in 2018, Joe Root in Ahmedabad in 2021, and Shoaib Bashir today). For India, only Sachin Tendulkar has done it more often (six times) while Rohit Sharma also did it thrice.

Shubman Gill: 147 (227)

5 – Gill became the fifth Indian player to score a century in his maiden Test leading the side. 147 by him is the second highest score on captaincy debut for India behind Vijay Hazare’s 164 against England in Delhi in 1951.

Hundreds on captaincy debut for India

Player Scores Vs Venue Season Vijay Hazare 164* Eng Delhi 1951/52 Shubman Gill 147 Eng Leeds 2025 Virat Kohli 115 & 141 Aus Adelaide 2014/15 Sunil Gavaskar 116 & 35* NZ Auckland 1975/76 Dilip Vengsarkar 10 & 102 WI Delhi 1987/88

12.7% of balls left alone by Gill during his knock – the most for him among his six scores of 100+ in Test cricket. It also happens to be Gill’s maiden Test century outside the sub-continent.

58 runs scored by Gill off England seamers off the front foot or stepping down the wicket – the highest tally for him in a Test knock. Ten of his 16 boundaries were hit off the front foot, the most by him in an innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal: 101 (159)

5 – Jaiswal became the fifth Indian player to score a century in his maiden Test innings in England after Vijay Manjrekar, Sandeep Patil, Sourav Ganguly and Murali Vijay. Jaiswal now has a hundred in his maiden Test appearance in three of the four visiting countries he played in having scored 171 in West Indies and 161 in Australia.

11 runs scored by Jaiswal of his tally of 101 runs came on the leg side – by far the lowest for him among his five Test hundreds. Each of his four previous three-figure knocks have had 35% or higher share of runs on the on-side.

4 – This was the fourth instance of three or more Indian batters scoring hundreds in the same innings in a Test outside Asia. The first instance came in Sydney in 1986, the second in Leeds in 2002, and the most recent in Gros Islet in 2006.

471 by India is the lowest all-out total for a team to have three or more individual centurions, the previous lowest being South Africa’s 475 against England in Centurion in 2016. Overall, this is only the fourth time a team has failed to get to 500 despite having three individual centurions in the innings.

2012 was the last time three or more visiting batters scored hundreds in an innings in England. Hashim Amla top scored with an unbeaten 311 followed by three figure knocks from Graeme Smith (131) and Jacques Kallis (182*).
