Ravichandran Ashwin has been fined 30 per cent of his match fee for an incident during the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match between Dindigul Dragons and Tiruppur Tamizhans on Sunday (June 8) night in Coimbatore. The former India all-rounder was seen expressing dissent at an on-field umpiring decision after being adjudged lbw to R. Sai Kishore, despite the ball appearing to have pitched outside leg stump.

“There was a hearing conducted by the match referee after the game,” a TNPL official told Cricbuzz. “Ashwin was fined 10 per cent for showing dissent towards the umpires and 20 per cent for misuse of equipment. He accepted the sanctions.” Ashwin could not be immediately reached for comment.

The match, played under lights at the Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science Cricket Ground, featured umpire Kritika and match referee Arjun Kripal Singh. Ashwin, captaining Dindigul Dragons, had no review available at the time of his dismissal, having already exhausted both referrals on wide-ball calls.

A clip of the incident has gone viral on social media. In it, Ashwin is seen remonstrating with the umpire immediately after being given out while attempting a sweep shot. As he walked off, he was visibly frustrated, hitting his pads with the bat and later flinging his gloves in anger.

The live commentary on the TNPL website made no mention of dissent. It read: “4.5: Ravichandran Ashwin’s aggressive sweep attempt against a good-length delivery outside leg results in an lbw decision.”

Ashwin had made a quick 18 off 11 balls, including two fours and a six. His dismissal at 39/1 in the fifth over triggered a collapse, with Dindigul losing their remaining nine wickets for just 54 runs. Chasing 94, Tiruppur Tamizhans completed the win with nine wickets in hand and 49 balls to spare.

Dindigul Dragons currently sit fifth on the TNPL points table, with one win and one loss from two games. This is the ninth edition of the league, which began on June 6 and runs through to July 6.
