England secured a thrilling 22-run victory over India in the third Test at Lord’s to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The hard-fought win has brought major changes to the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points table.

The match saw both teams score identical first-innings totals of 387, keeping the contest balanced after three days. England were bowled out for just 192 in their second innings, setting India a target of 193. On day four, India ended on 58-4, with England gaining the upper hand.

Day five began with a fiery spell from Jofra Archer, who removed Rishabh Pant early. Ben Stokes then dismissed KL Rahul, who had scored a century in the first innings, as India slipped further. A late resistance led by Ravindra Jadeja, alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj, brought India close. However, Siraj’s defensive shot ricocheted onto the stumps, ending the innings at 170 and giving England a narrow win.

Ben Stokes was named player of the match for his all-round performance, scoring 77 runs across both innings and picking up five wickets.

Despite their win, England’s joy was slightly dampened after the ICC penalised them for maintaining a slow over rate. The team was found two overs short of the required rate after time allowances were considered.

According to Article 16.11.2 of the WTC playing conditions, teams lose one WTC point for every over short. As a result, England’s points dropped from 24 to 22, and their percentage of points (PCT) fell from 66.67% to 61.11%. This penalty saw England drop from second to third place in the updated WTC standings, with Sri Lanka moving up to second.

Meanwhile, Australia remain on top of the WTC standings with a perfect PCT of 100% after completing a 3-0 series whitewash over West Indies, while Sri Lanka hold second place with 16 points and a 66.67 PCT following their series win against Bangladesh.

However, India slipped to fourth after losing the Lord’s Test, with 12 points and a PCT of 33.33. Bangladesh are fifth with four points and a PCT of 16.67 after losing their series to Sri Lanka, while West Indies sit at the bottom of the table with zero points following a 3-0 series defeat to Australia. Pakistan, South Africa, and New Zealand are yet to begin their WTC 2025-27 campaigns.
