Stats highlights from Day 3 of the ongoing fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford, Manchester.

13409 Test runs for Joe Root, the second most in the game’s history, only behind Sachin Tendulkar’s 15921. Root, who was at 13259 at the start of this Test, went past Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting during an imperious 150-run knock.

Most runs in Test cricket

Player Matches Innings Runs Ave 100s HS Sachin Tendulkar 200 329 15921 53.78 51 248* Joe Root 157 286 13409 51.17 38 262 Ricky Ponting 168 287 13378 51.85 41 257 Jacques Kallis 166 280 13289 55.37 45 224 Rahul Dravid 164 286 13288 52.31 36 270

38 Test hundreds for Root is the joint fourth-most in Tests alongside Kumar Sangakkara, with only Tendulkar (51), Kallis (45) and Ponting (41) ahead of him.

A measure of how imperious Root has been in recent years: this was his 21st Test ton since the start of 2021, the next-most in this timeframe is 10 each by Steven Smith and Kane Williamson.

16 – This was the 16th time Root reached 150 in Tests, levelling with Mahela Jayawardene. Only Tendulkar (20), Brian Lara (19), Kumar Sangakkara (19) and Sir Don Bradman (18) have more.

23 Test centuries for Root in England, the joint-most for anyone in home Tests alongside Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Mahela Jayawardene. He also went past Jayawardene for the third-highest aggregate in home Tests, and is not far away from the second spot in this list too.

Most runs in home Tests

Player Matches Innings Runs Ave 100 HS Ricky Ponting 92 154 7578 56.97 23 257 Sachin Tendulkar 94 153 7216 52.67 22 217 Joe Root 83 145 7195 55.34 23 254 Mahela Jayawardene 81 129 7167 59.72 23 374 Jacques Kallis 88 143 7035 56.73 23 224

12 – This was Root’s 12th Test ton against India, the most for anyone, overtaking Steven Smith’s 11. It’s the joint-third for most centuries against an opponent in the format, alongside Jack Hobbs and Steven Smith, who have 12 Ashes hundreds each. Bradman (19 vs England) and Sunil Gavaskar (13 vs West Indies) lead this list.

Furthermore, this was Root’s ninth Test ton against India at home – the most by a batter against an opponent in home Tests, surpassing Bradman’s eight against England.

104 – This also happened to be Root’s 104th 50-plus score in the format, taking him past Kallis and Ponting (103 each), only behind Tendulkar’s 119.

3 – During his innings, Root went past 1000 Test runs at Old Trafford (1128 by the end of his innings), becoming the first player to do so. Having also amassed 2166 runs at Lord’s, he became the third England batter to aggregate 1000-plus Test runs at two different venues, after Alastair Cook and Graham Gooch (both did that at Lord’s and at The Oval).

588 runs for Root against Ravindra Jadeja in Tests. That’s the highest aggregate for anyone against a bowler in the format, surpassing 577 for Steven Smith against Stuart Broad. Jadeja eventually had him stumped, just the second such dismissal for England’s No.4 in the format after Nathan Lyon had got him in a similar manner in the Ashes 2023 opener at Edgbaston.
