Yorkshire have been handed a blow after their overseas signing Ruturaj Gaikwad backed out of his deal due to personal reasons.

While the exact reasons haven’t been revealed, Gaikwad was supposed to join the squad ahead of their next clash against defending champions Surrey. The 28-year-old was then due to play the remaining Championship fixtures and was also signed to play the One-Day cup in his maiden stint in county cricket. Yorkshire are currently languishing in the 8th spot in the Championship table and working on getting a replacement.

“Unfortunately Gaikwad’s not coming now for personal reasons,” head coach Anthony McGrath said. “We’re not going to have him for Scarborough or for the rest of the season. So that’s disappointing.

“I can’t tell you anything about the reasons why, but we hope that everything’s ok. We’ve literally just found out. We’re working behind the scenes on what we can do. But it’s only two or three days away, so I’m not sure what we can do at the moment. We’re working to try and get a possible replacement, but time pressure is the issue.”

Gaikwad hasn’t been in action in over three months now ever since he suffered an elbow injury in an IPL game that ruled him out of the tournament. Even though he recovered and was subsequently picked in the India A squad for the four-day matches in England, he didn’t get a game.
