Travis Head Breaks Silence On Mid-Game Altercation With Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis

After the completion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 encounter against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener Travis Head opened up and shared his thoughts on the verbal spat between him and Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis during the ninth over of the 27th fixture of the ongoing 18th edition of the cash-rich league. During the ninth over of the innings, Glenn Maxwell was brought into the attack. On the third and fourth deliveries of the over, Head slammed two consecutive sixes off Maxwell, which frustrated him.

After the two sixes, Maxwell exchanged a few words with the Hyderabad opener. After the completion of the over, Head walked up to Maxwell and responded, sparking a heated verbal exchange between the two. The situation escalated until the on-field umpire stepped in to finish the spat. Soon after, Marcus Stoinis, fellow Australian and Punjab Kings all-rounder, joined in and was seen engaging in a fresh argument with Head.

Speaking at the post-match presentation on the verbal exchange, the 31-year-old player said, “You bring out the best and the worst in each other when you know them so well, nothing too serious, just a bit of banter.”

“Not bad, nice to get on the winners list. It was an exceptional night; we needed it. We had our work cut out at the halfway point. We gave ourselves a chance, showed a bit more patience at the start. We knew the plans they were going to come with. Gave ourselves a bit more time and got off to a flyer. We did the things we did really well last year, and that’s what made us such a good partnership. It’s just about encouraging each other, picking our targets and setting the stage. We’ve seen 270-280 scored on that wicket. We’ve played on slightly different wickets, but no.2 seems to put out big scores. Everything had to go right for us to chase down 240,” the Australian batter added.

Coming to the match, PBKS won the toss and elected to bat first. A 66-run stand between Priyansh Arya (36 in 13 balls, with two fours and four sixes) and Prabhsimran Singh (42 in 23 balls, with seven fours and a six) started off things well for PBKS. Later, a half-century from skipper Shreyas Iyer (82 in 36 balls, with six fours and six sixes) and a final flourish from Marcus Stoinis (34* in 11 balls, with a four and four sixes) powered PBKS to 245/6 in their 20 overs.

Harshal Patel (4/42) and Eshan Malinga (2/45) were among the wicket-takers for SRH.

In the run-chase of 246 runs, Abhishek (141 in 55 balls, with 14 fours and 10 sixes) and Travis Head (66 in 37 balls, with nine fours and three sixes) started off well with a 171-run partnership. After Head was dismissed, Abhishek continued to rage while Heinrich Klaasen (21*) and Ishan Kishan (9*) put some finishing touches, chasing down the mammoth total.

This is also the second-highest run chase in IPL history, with 262 chased by PBKS against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) last year being at the top. SRH has risen to the eighth spot with two wins and four losses while PBKS is at sixth place, with three wins and two losses.

IPL 2025: Abhishek blitzkrieg helps Sunrisers Hyderabad pull off stunning chase vs Punjab Kings

In the days leading up to the clash with Punjab Kings, officials at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium sought divine intervention to end Sunrisers Hyderabad’s run of four defeats on the trot. The higher powers seemingly answered those prayers, as SRH beat the Kings by eight wickets on Saturday.

Among the 36,000-plus crowd was Lady Luck, who ensured the boisterous home fans finally had something to celebrate. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma forged their best partnership to help SRH complete the second-biggest chase in IPL history.

The 24-year-old had two reprieves early when Marcus Stoinis failed to hold on to an acrobatic effort and Glenn Maxwell couldn’t find a direct hit with Abhishek halfway down the pitch. He then saw a catch at deep-backward point ruled out thanks to Yash Thakur overstepping his mark.

HIGHLIIGHTS | SRH VS PBKS

Abhishek brought up his half-century in just 19 balls. Head, who played second fiddle till the ninth over, then broke free, sending Maxwell over the ropes twice to put SRH halfway to victory just 52 balls into their innings.

Chahal’s dismissal of Head notwithstanding, Abhishek struck his maiden IPL ton in just 40 balls, celebrating with a message of love to the exuberant crowd. The Amritsar native then went on to register the highest score by an Indian (141) in the IPL.

By the time Arshdeep ended Abhishek’s stay in the middle, SRH was well on its way to its second win of the season, which Klaasen and Ishan Kishan sealed without a fuss.

Earlier, proceedings got off to a comical start with Ishan losing track of the ball on the sponsor mat, mustering a sheepish smile while being bailed out by Pat Cummins. However, things quickly turned grim for the host, with Kings plundering 53 runs in the first three overs.

After the openers fell, skipper Shreyas Iyer kept the tempo going, bringing up his fastest IPL half-century (22 balls). Harshal Patel’s four-wicket haul made inroads in the Kings’ charge before Stoinis clobbered four sixes in the final over off Mohammad Shami to end on a high.

But the SRH of old raised its hand and put the game to bed with ease.

Lucknow, Hyderabad rise in standings

SRH went from 10th to 8th as the two five-time champions Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians now find themselves at the bottom of the pile. At the top of the IPL standings too, there was a change as Delhi Capitals took top spot after Gujarat’s defeat to Lucknow Super Giants.

There was also ranking gain for Lucknow Super Giants earlier in the day after they defeated the Gujarat Titans by six wickets at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow.

IPL 2025: Where Abhishek Sharma Stands In Orange Cap Race After Historic 141, Also Updated Points Table

Abhishek Sharma returned to form with a breathtaking 141 off 55 balls, overshadowing Shreyas Iyer’s 82, as Sunrisers Hyderabad scripted the second-highest run chase in IPL history to return to winning ways with a comprehensive eight-wicket win over Punjab Kings in a high-scoring encounter in Hyderabad on Saturday. Opting to bat, PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer smashed a blistering 82 off 36 balls, laced with six sixes and as many fours, powering his side to a mammoth 245 for six, despite a four-wicket haul by Harshal Patel (4/42).

However, it was Abhishek Sharma, who had been struggling for form this season, that stole the show with an astonishing display of clean hitting. The southpaw, who was dropped twice, hammered 10 sixes and 14 fours, recording the highest individual score by an Indian in IPL history, as SRH – languishing at the bottom of the table – chased down the target scoring 247 in just 18.3 overs, snapping a four-game losing streak.

The knock helped Abhishek rise to the 12th spot in the Orange Cap race.

Lockie Ferguson’s hamstring injury after bowling just two balls also left Iyer with one bowler short.

If Abhishek was the chief aggressor, reaching his fifty in just 19 balls, Travis Head provided solid support, blasting three sixes and nine fours in a fluent 66 off 37 balls. The duo put on a record 171-run opening stand, making a mockery of the daunting chase.

The 24-year-old from Punjab dismantled the PBKS bowling attack with brute force. Marco Jansen was taken for four boundaries in the second over, and Yash Thakur was clobbered for two sixes and a four as SRH stormed to 60 in just 4 overs.

Glenn Maxwell was welcomed with a six over extra cover and a four, but the real damage was felt by Yuzvendra Chahal, who dropped Abhishek off his own bowling and was later dispatched into the mid-wicket stands.

Having played second fiddle early on, Head shifted gears in the ninth over, smashing Maxwell for back-to-back sixes. With Sunrisers in full flow, PBKS skipper Iyer used seven bowlers within the first nine overs, but none could make a breakthrough-partly due to some sloppy fielding.

Abhishek exploded again in the 10th over, carting Jansen for two sixes and two fours as SRH raced to 143 for no loss at the halfway mark.

Chahal finally broke the partnership in the 13th over, with Head holing out to long-on. Abhishek soon reached his maiden IPL century in 40 balls and celebrated by pulling out a piece of white paper from his pocket.

Needing 60 off the last six overs, Abhishek continued the carnage with two sixes and a four off Chahal, bringing up SRH’s 200 in the 15th over.

Thakur was smashed for another six and four before Arshdeep Singh finally ended Abhishek’s dream innings in the 17th over. But it was too little, too late, as Heinrich Klaasen (21) and Ishan Kishan (9) finished the chase comfortably.

Earlier, openers Priyansh Arya (36) and Prabhsimran Singh (42) provided a blazing 66-run start, but it was skipper Shreyas Iyer who anchored the innings with a whirlwind 82 off 36 balls, hitting six sixes and as many fours. He shared a 73-run stand off 40 balls with Nehal Wadhera (22).

Marcus Stoinis provided the final flourish, hammering Mohammed Shami (0/75) for four consecutive sixes in the last over as Punjab Kings posted a daunting total.

On a belter of a pitch, PBKS raced to 89 for one in the powerplay. Prabhsimran set the tone by smashing Shami (0/75) for three boundaries before Priyansh took on Pat Cummins (0/40) with a six and two fours. The left-hander then clobbered Shami for two sixes and a four, while Prabhsimran flicked one for a maximum.

Harshal Patel (4/42) eventually broke the stand, deceiving Priyansh with a slower ball. PBKS were 66 for one in four overs. Harshal nearly had Prabhsimran too, but Abhishek Sharma dropped a tough chance. Iyer ended the powerplay with a six.

Eshan Malinga (2/45), on IPL debut, dismissed Prabhsimran, but Iyer and Wadhera took him apart in his second over. Zeeshan Ansari, economical early on, was smashed for two sixes and a reverse-hit four by Iyer, who brought up his fifty off Shami.

Punjab lost two quick wickets – Malinga cleaned up Wadhera, and Harshal trapped Shashank Singh (2) via DRS – to slip to 168/4 in 15 overs. But Iyer continued the assault before falling to Harshal in the 18th over along with Glenn Maxwell.

Stoinis finished the innings in style, taking Shami apart in the final over.

Pat Cummins Stunned As Ishan Kishan Fails To Spot Ball. Internet Can’t Stop Laughing. Watch

The SunRisers Hyderabad vs Punjab Kings IPL 2025 match was witness to a hilarious moment when Ishan Kishan failed to spot the ball while fielding. The incident happened in the opening over by Mohammed Shami. As Prabhsimran Singh drove past the bowler, the ball was stopped by Ishan Kishan but in a bizarre incident he could not spot the ball later on. Pat Cummins was stunned seeing the act. Internet could not stop laughing at the incident.

‘s bizarre fielding act left SunRisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins scratching his head in an IPL 2025 fixture against Punjab Kings at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Saturday. The incident happened on the second delivery of the opening over when Punjab Kings’ opening batter, Prabhsimran Singh, drove the ball past the bowler.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat first against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Saturday. The PBKS side is currently placed fourth in the IPL 2025 points table after winning three out of four matches in the ongoing competition, with four points to their name. On the other hand, the Pat Cummins-led side is in the last spot in the points table, having managed to win just one match (two points) out of five encounters in the ongoing 18th edition of the cash-rich league.

“We are going to bat. In the last few games, we have batted first; we have the ability to post good scores. We want to play some aggressive cricket; that’s our mindset at the moment. We have seen that we don’t have a fantastic record in the power play. We don’t have that thought at the back of our minds. Every individual in our team plays their brand of cricket. We’ve got to be top-notch and need to back our instincts. We have to keep repeating that again and again. Playing with the same team,” Shreyas Iyer said after winning the toss.

During the time of toss, the Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins informed that the team have made one change in the playing XI where they have brought in Eshan Malinga in place of Kamindu Mendis.

“It’s fine. I think we can chase anything. Not an ideal start. But we are training really well. Everyone is in a good space. We have lost a few in a row, but that isn’t ideal. One change. Malinga comes in the side for Kamindu Mendis,” Pat Cummins said.

ICC may agree to changes in point system in WTC cycle; two-tier system plan likely to be deferred

The International Cricket Council (ICC) could agree to major changes in the points system of the World Test Championships (WTC) from the next cycle, while it is likely to defer the contentious proposal to segregate Test cricket into two divisions during its meetings in Zimbabwe over the weekend, a report in the Guardian said on Saturday.

The governing body for the sport has been long contemplating a new system of bonus points based on the margin of victory — “similar to that used in rugby union, while weighting points for wins based on the strength of opponents and adding extra points for winning away from home” — and it could be a big point of discussion during a series of meetings.

The next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle begins with India touring England for a five-match series in June this year, five days after the conclusion of the final for the 2023-2025 cycle between and South Africa and Australia at Lord’s.

The current WTC system awards the same number of points — 12 for a win, six for a tie and four for a draw — which has given rise to the discontent that India, England and Australia — the Big Three in cricket — “are disadvantaged as they play more games against each other”.

“South Africa’s achievement in reaching this year’s final led to some resentment as they did so without playing England or Australia. Series wins against West Indies, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, a draw against India and defeat in India yielded enough points for the Proteas to reach the final for the first time,” the report added.

ALSO READ | England cricket great James Anderson awarded knighthood

The report also said that the issue of over-rate penalties will also come up for discussion, with England’s director of cricket Rob Key highlighting the severity of the WTC points on the rankings.

“Six of the nine teams in the current edition have been hit with penalties for slow play, England are the worst offenders. They lost 22 points across their campaign to finish sixth with a points percentage of 41.5. However, their win percentage of 51.5 during this period is third best behind the finalists, South Africa and Australia,” the report said.

Single-league format to likely continue

The report added that the ICC could, for now, put on hold the plan to divide Test cricket into two divisions and continue with the single-league WTC format.

“A proposal from Cricket Australia to move to two divisions will not be put to a vote,” said the report.

It said that the ICC needed more time to figure out the sporting and financial implications of the two-tier system and that the proposal could be on the agenda ahead of the 2027-2029 WTC cycle.

“Rather than expanding to two divisions of six by adding Afghanistan, Ireland and Zimbabwe to the WTC, the next edition running from this summer until 2027 will retain its existing nine-team format,” said the report.

Cricket Australia is said to be in favour of having two divisions, which would entail Australia, England and India playing against each other twice every three years, “rather than the current model of two series in four years, and generate huge financial returns”.

The other Test-playing countries have expressed their reservations about the two-tier system, arguing that it could lead to them falling even further behind the so-called Big Three.
