Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals bowling coach Munaf Patel has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team’s match against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday.

“Munaf Patel admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 – which pertains to the conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game – and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction,” the IPL said in a statement on Thursday.

“For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” it added.

The incident occurred during Delhi’s bowling when the fourth umpire reportedly stopped Delhi’s reserve player from entering the field to convey Patel’s message in the middle. The former India pacer was seen having an argument with the umpire while tying up his laces at the boundary line. The video of the incident went viral on social media.

Delhi Capitals completed a thrilling Super Over win after Mitchell Starc’s spot-on performance with the ball. He not only defended nine in the last over against set batters Dhruv Jurel and Shimron Hetmyer but also restricted Rajasthan to 11 runs in the Super Over.

KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs comfortably guided the home side to victory to register their first win of the season at Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Starc was named Player of the Match for his power-packed bowling performance in the match. He returned with the figures of 1-36 in his four overs while he also snared two scalped in the Super Over.

The victory helped Delhi to reclaim the top spot with 10 points in six games and will take on Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday.

Rohit Sharma, India’s Test and ODI captain, will be the brand ambassador for the T20 Mumbai League, which is set to return after a four-year break. The tournament, organised by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), had been suspended after its 2018 and 2019 editions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the league making a comeback, the MCA is hopeful that other top Mumbai players like Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav will also feature in the event.

Rohit, who retired from T20 Internationals but continues to play in the IPL, will attend the official launch of the league on Friday.

While participation isn’t mandatory, the MCA expects leading players to take part.

“Their presence will boost Mumbai cricket and add value to the league,” an MCA official told PTI.

Delhi Capitals bowling coach Munaf Patel has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee and accumulated one demerit point for breaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) Code of Conduct during the high-octane game against Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday.

The match went down to the wire on Wednesday night with DC winning the edge-of-the-seat thriller in a Super Over after both teams were tied at 188 runs.

The former India pacer “admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to the conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game,” said an IPL statement.

“Munaf Patel, Bowling Coach, Delhi Capitals has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated One Demerit Point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team’s match against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Wednesday,” said the statement.

Munaf, the statement said, had “accepted the Match Referee’s sanction”.

The statement did not specify Munaf’s exact offence, but it is likely that he was penalised for his argument with a match official after the former India pacer was not allowed to send a player into the middle to convey his message.

Munaf, a key member of India’s 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squad under MS Dhoni, was appointed DC bowling coach in November last year, replacing James Hopes.

Article 2.20 covers all types of conduct that are contrary to the spirit of the game and are not specifically and adequately covered by the specific offences set out elsewhere in this Code of Conduct.
