Essex County Cricket Club has announced that opening batter Nick Browne will retire from professional cricket at the end of the 2025 season.
Leytonstone-born Browne steps away after more than 10 years with the Club, concluding a distinguished career that saw him make 209 appearances and collect multiple trophies along the way.
Amassing nearly 10,000 runs across all formats and recording 22 centuries, Browne has been central to Essex’s modern era of success, playing a key role in securing the County Championship titles in 2017 and 2019, the Vitality Blast in 2019, and the Bob Willis Trophy in 2020.
The 34-year-old made his debut in May 2013 at New Road against Worcestershire and quickly established himself as one of the side’s most dependable performers.
In 2014, Browne claimed the First XI Young Player of the Year award before receiving his County Cap the following season, a campaign in which he reached 1,000 Championship runs – the first Essex batter to do so since Ravi Bopara in 2008 – capped off by a superb 151* (184) against Leicestershire.
The following year, 2016, Browne once again passed the 1,000-run milestone in first-class cricket, averaging 50.48 and registering a career-best 255 (445) against Derbyshire – one of two double-centuries he scored against them that season as Essex secured promotion to Division One.
His appetite for marathon knocks continued in 2017 when he struck three consecutive double centuries, including one against Middlesex at Chelmsford in a record-breaking opening stand of 373 with Alastair Cook. He went on to pass 1,000 first-class runs in three successive seasons, reaching 5,000 career runs for Essex by 2019.
Wearing the number 10 shirt, Browne was part of four trophy-winning squads under the leadership of Ryan ten Doeschate, Simon Harmer and Tom Westley.
In 2022, he joined Graham Gooch as only the second Essex batter to compile four double-centuries in first-class cricket, thanks to his unbeaten 234 from 454 balls against Somerset at Chelmsford.
Earlier this year, Browne was awarded a 2025 Testimonial in recognition of his exceptional service to the Club.
?? He gave it his all every time he walked out to the middle wearing Essex colours.
A true professional on and off the field, with a passion for the game and for Essex Cricket that stands out. Thank you, Browney! ??

“I want to say a massive thank you to all of the members and fans of Essex for your unwavering support throughout the years. I have played every ball, every session and every day like it is my last.
