The Sydney Sixers gave been instructed to put their horror performance against the Melbourne Stars behind them as they look to regroup against the ladder-leading Hurricanes on Saturday night
Matthew Mott has told his star-studded Sydney Sixers to erase the worst loss in the club’s history from their memory, as they fight to rebound from a nightmare at home.
The Sixers flew to Hobart on Friday fresh off a crushing 111-run rain-affected loss to Melbourne Stars, with only a 36-hour gap until their clash with the Hurricanes.
In a Thursday night horror show for the Sixers, Meg Lanning’s 135 with the bat more than tripled the Sixers’ response of 42 all out at North Sydney Oval.
The 111-run loss was the biggest in the club’s history and would have been even bigger if not for rain after the Stars posted 4-219.
The Sixers’ response was the lowest total in the club’s history while facing just 7.4 balls for the shortest completed innings in the tournament’s 11 seasons.
Making matters worse is the fact it came with Ellyse Perry, Alyssa Healy, Ashleigh Gardner and No.1 draft pick Sophia Dunkley making up their top four.
Kim Garth was superb with the ball for the Stars as she ran through Perry, Healy and Dunkley.
This was a dark night for the Sixers.
“At the end of the day we don’t have long to lick our wounds … so there won’t be too much talk about it,” Sixers coach Mott said.
“We’ll try and erase it from our memory. We’re two-and-two. But a very disappointing performance all round.
“It’s a mental swing around, as a professional cricketer you have to pick yourself up off the canvas.
“This is our home ground. That’s twice we haven’t batted well on it, so we need to address that.”
Mott said his team had bowled too wide to Lanning, with the only highlight being the team’s defensive fielding at the postage-size North Sydney Oval.
“And that is a pretty sad state of affairs when I’m talking about that as a highlight,” he said.
Lanning’s long-time coach with Australia, Mott still considers his former captain’s 133no against England at Chelmsford in 2019 as the best of her T20 career.
But he said Thursday night’s effort, which topped the Chelmsford knock to be Lanning’s highest T20 score, was among her best.
“It’s a great lesson for everyone in the comp,” Mott said.
“She got a base first, she was 30 off 30 balls. And when she picked her match ups she put her foot on the throat.
“We talked about bringing the stumps into play a lot and we failed to do that.”
