Keshav Maharaj has been ruled out of the second and final Test against Zimbabwe following a groin strain. Maharaj sustained the injury while batting on Day 3 of the first Test that South Africa won by a massive margin of 328 runs.

Cricket South Africa has confirmed that the left-arm spinner will be flying home for an assessment in order to determine the extent of his injury. Senuran Muthusamy, who has played four Tests so far, has been named as Maharaj’s replacement.

Since Maharaj was also named captain of the second-string squad in the absence of several regulars, CSA have confirmed that allrounder Wiaan Mulder will be in charge of the team in the second Test, which begins on July 6 in Bulawayo. Mulder had an excellent outing in the first Test where he picked up four wickets in the first innings and followed it up with an excellent 147 with the bat.

Meanwhile, South Africa have also released Lungi Ngidi from the squad in order to give the pacers from the opening Test another opportunity to make an impression. South Africa had a pace attack of Codi Yusuf, Kwena Maphaka, Corbin Bosch and Mulder for the first Test with Maharaj being the lone spinner.
