Allrounders Marizanne Kapp (47* & 2-24) and Alice Capsey (55 & 2-16) gave Oval Invincibles their second win on the bounce, beating Welsh Fire by 39 runs. The duo led the middle-order fight to help the Invincibles post a strong 150 on the board before a disciplined bowling effort doused the Fire on 111 in reply.

Invincibles were off to an ominous start losing Lauren Winfield-Hill on the very first ball after opting to bat at home. However, Capsey joined Meg Lanning (23 off 14) to resurrect the innings with their 45-run partnership. In-form Lanning’s stroke-filled cameo included five boundaries before she was trapped LBW by Katie Levick.

Kapp and Capsey shared a 47-run partnership for the third wicket where the latter played the aggressor. She raised a 32-ball half-century, taking the attack to the opposition, but fell soon after – Shabnim Ismail picking her second. Invincibles lost Paige Scholfield in quick succession too, but Amanda Jade-Wellington gave them a move on with a brisk cameo of 17 in nine deliveries. Kapp carried on till the end, finishing unbeaten on 47 but taking the side to a strong finish at the backend.

Fire’s chase never took off with them losing wickets at regular intervals. Opener Sophia Dunkley made a fighting 56 before she was the sixth batter dismissed at the score of 90, and the Fire innings crumbled thereafter. Dunkley and Hayley Matthews gave Fire a quickfire start though, but none of the others batters stuck around.

Kapp and Capsey took two apiece in the middle-order collapse, while Jade-Wellington too finished with a brace. Sophia Smale, who got rid of Dunkley and then mopped up the tail cheaply, was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 13 from her 17 deliveries as Fire folded for 111, falling well behind in the chase after Dunkley’s departure.

Brief scores: Oval Invincibles 150/5 in 100 balls (Alice Capsey 55, Marizanne Kapp 47*; Hayley Mathews 2-18, Shabnim Ismail 2-31) beat Welsh Fire 111 all out in 97 balls (Sophia Dunkley 56; Sophia Smale 3-13, Marizanne Kapp 2-24, Alice Capsey 2-16) by 39 runs.
