Thirty years on from his first class debut for Gloucestershire, the Club is proud to confirm the appointment of former bowler Jon Lewis as its new Director of Cricket.
In this key position, Jon will be tasked with developing and implementing a unified cricketing strategy that aligns with Gloucestershire’s long term ambitions.
His remit will cover all aspects of performance across the Men’s and Women’s teams, as well as the Club’s pathway programmes, ensuring a consistent philosophy in playing style, coaching, and player development throughout the organisation.
Jon will bring together and lead all performance programmes to foster a connected, collaborative environment built on shared principles of excellence. Working closely with the Executive team, he will ensure cricketing performance and culture remain central to Gloucestershire’s wider vision and strategic direction.
On his return to the Club, Lewis said:
“I’m really excited. It’s a big job and there’s lots to do. We’ve got some things that are really pressing and some that are exciting in the long term too.
“It’s a place that has a really special meaning for me. It created a lot of opportunities for me to become a better player, and hopefully I can give people the same opportunities that I had here.
“I need to get to know how everything works properly, get behind the scenes and make sure everyone’s working together.
“That unity has always been part of the Gloucestershire DNA, the teamwork and people working together. I think that’s really important, as is setting high standards and making sure the standards of play, training, and the way we do things every day are really set in stone.”

Lewis stands among the most accomplished players in Gloucestershire’s storied history. A pivotal figure in the Club’s dominant white ball sides of the 1990s and 2000s, the former seamer played a major role during Gloucestershire’s golden era of success, featuring alongside club greats such as Jack Russell and Mark Alleyne.
On the international stage, Jon represented England in all three formats: Test, ODI and T20 International, and became only the third Gloucestershire player to appear for England in a Cricket World Cup when he was selected for the 2007 tournament.
Among his international highlights was a remarkable IT20 debut in which he claimed the wickets of Australian stars Andrew Symonds, Michael Clarke, Ricky Ponting and Damien Martyn, a standout performance in what was then a record victory for England. In 2006, he joined the illustrious ranks of Jessop, Hammond and Grace as Gloucestershire players to have represented England at Test level.
Since retiring from professional cricket in 2013, Jon has built an extensive coaching résumé within the England setup. He previously served as Young Lions Head Coach and later as England Men’s Fast Bowling Coach before taking charge of the England Women’s team in November 2022.
During his two and a half year tenure as England Women’s Head Coach, Lewis oversaw a drawn home Ashes series against Australia in 2023 and led the team through two T20 World Cups. However, England were unable to reach the final stages of either tournament, and his spell in charge concluded following a challenging tour of Australia, where England failed to register a win.
A subsequent ECB review following the series led to changes in leadership, with Charlotte Edwards and Nat Sciver Brunt replacing Lewis and Heather Knight as Head Coach and captain respectively.
Despite the difficult end to his international coaching stint, Lewis remained highly regarded for his technical insight and commitment to developing players.
A passionate advocate for the women’s game, Jon also made history in 2023 when he became Head Coach of the UP Warriorz in the inaugural Women’s Premier League in India. Across two seasons with the franchise, he worked alongside world class players including Alyssa Healy, Deepti Sharma and Sophie Ecclestone.
During the 2025 season, Jon returned to Gloucestershire in a consultancy capacity, contributing his knowledge and experience to both the men’s and women’s teams. His guidance proved invaluable in helping players and coaches refine their skills and deepen their understanding of the game.
The Club is delighted to officially welcome Jon back as he takes the lead in shaping Gloucestershire’s cricketing strategy across the Men’s and Women’s programmes, as well as the pathway system. His wealth of playing and coaching experience, spanning county, international, and franchise cricket, will be instrumental in driving Gloucestershire forward into a new era of excellence.
