West Indies pacer Jayden Seales was fined for breaching the ICC code of conduct during the ongoing Test match against India in Delhi. Apart from copping a fine of 25 percent of his match fee for the breach, Seales was also handed his second demerit point in a 24-month period with the first coming against Bangladesh in a Test match last December.

The incident occurred on the opening day of the Test in the 29th over of the Indian innings. Seales had fielded the ball on his follow-through and threw it back at the batter Yashasvi Jaiswal with the ball hitting him on his pads. He was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”

However, Seales did contest the sanction proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft as a result of which a formal hearing was required. While the 24-year-old pointed out that he was attempting to run out the Indian opener, the match referee referred to replay clips and deemed Seales’ attempts unnecessary and inappropriate.
