IPL 2025: Ayush Mhatre set to replace injured Ruturaj Gaikwad at Chennai Super Kings

Young Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre is set to replace Ruturaj Gaikwad at Chennai Super Kings for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.

The decision comes after Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow fracture.

Sources in CSK confirmed to Sportstar that the youngster from Mumbai will join the team ahead of its away fixture against Mumbai Indians on April 20.

Mhatre was earlier summoned to Chennai for a trial, along with a couple of other domestic cricketers, and it is believed that the team management zeroed in on 17-year-old Mhatre for his aggressive batting and also the fact that he had an impressive domestic season worked in his favour.

In nine first-class matches, he has amassed 504 runs, including two centuries and a fifty. In seven List A games, he has already scored 458 runs, with two hundreds.

“The team would have wanted him to join at the earliest, but there are a few formalities pending, and he can only join after a couple of days. So, hopefully, he will link up with the side ahead of the game against MI at the Wankhede Stadium,” a source stated.

CSK, the five-time champion side, is currently reeling at the bottom of the table with just two points from six outings.
