England batter Harry Brook missed out on a well-deserved century during the ongoing first Test against India at Headingley, falling for 99 on day three.

Batting at number five, the 26-year-old played a brilliant knock, scoring 99 runs off 112 balls with 11 fours and two sixes. However, his innings came to an end in the 88th over when he was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna, falling just one run short of his ton.

With this, Brook became only the second English player to be dismissed on 99 in a Test against India. The first was Marcus Trescothick, who suffered the same fate in Ahmedabad back in 2001.

Brook also joined a rare group of England batters who have been dismissed on 99 in Test cricket. He is the 16th Englishman to do so, and only the third to be dismissed for 99 at Headingley—following Pakistan’s Saleem Malik (1987) and England’s Mike Atherton (1994).

England players dismissed for 99 in Test cricket:

Herbert Sutcliffe vs South Africa, Cape Town (1927)
Eddie Paynter vs Australia, Lord’s (1938)
Norman Yardley vs South Africa, Nottingham (1947)
Mike Smith vs South Africa, Lord’s (1960)
Mike Smith vs Pakistan, Lahore (1961)
Ted Dexter vs Australia, Brisbane (1962)
Dennis Amiss vs Pakistan, Karachi (1973)
Geoff Boycott vs West Indies, Port of Spain (1974)
Graham Gooch vs Australia, Melbourne (1980)
Martyn Moxon vs New Zealand, Auckland (1988)
Mike Atherton vs Australia, Lord’s (1993)
Mike Atherton vs South Africa, Leeds (1994)
Marcus Trescothick vs India, Ahmedabad (2001)
Kevin Pietersen vs Bangladesh, Chattogram (2010)
Jonny Bairstow vs South Africa, Nottingham (2017)
Harry Brook vs India, Leeds (2025)

Despite the disappointment, Brook’s knock proved crucial for England. He formed three valuable partnerships during his innings: 51 runs with captain Ben Stokes (20), 73 with wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith (40), and 49 with Chris Woakes (38), helping England close the gap on India’s first-innings total.

Brook came to the crease late on day two after Joe Root’s dismissal. He was initially caught off Jasprit Bumrah for a duck, but the delivery was declared a no-ball, giving him a second chance. He received another lifeline the next morning when Rishabh Pant dropped a catch off Ravindra Jadeja.

Ranked second in the ICC Test batting rankings, Brook made his Test debut against South Africa in 2022. Since then, he has played 26 Tests, scoring 2,438 runs with 8 centuries and 12 fifties. His standout performances include a triple century during England’s tour of Pakistan in 2024.
