England have named experienced spinner Liam Dawson as a replacement for Shoaib Bashir ahead of the fourth Test against India, which starts on July 23 at Old Trafford, Manchester.

The change comes after Bashir suffered a fracture in his left hand while fielding during the third Test at Lord’s. Despite the injury, the 21-year-old returned to take the final wicket and secure a dramatic victory for England. However, scans later confirmed the extent of the damage, ruling him out of the rest of the series.

In his place, the selectors have recalled 35-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner Liam Dawson. Dawson made his Test debut against India in 2016 and has played three Tests so far, taking seven wickets.

His recent domestic performances have earned him a call-up, with 21 wickets in nine matches for Hampshire in the ongoing County Championship.

“Liam Dawson deserves his call-up. He has been in outstanding form in the County Championship and consistently puts in strong performances for Hampshire,” said England Men’s National Selector Luke Wright.

England currently lead the five-match Test series 2-1 after a thrilling win at Lord’s. The fourth Test is crucial for both sides as the series moves to Manchester.

England squad for fourth Test:

Ben Stokes (c), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.
