The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Wednesday announced their playing XI for the first Test of the five-match series against India, starting Friday at Headingley in Leeds.

The squad sees the return of seasoned all-rounder Chris Woakes, who last played a Test in December 2024 against New Zealand. The 36-year-old missed the previous two Tests due to an ankle injury but made a successful comeback through the England Lions in a two-match series against India A.

Pacer Brydon Carse also returns to the Test side after recovering from a foot injury. The upcoming match will be his first Test appearance in England, having previously played in Pakistan and New Zealand.

Speaking about his selection, Carse expressed confidence and excitement at the opportunity to contribute.

“I’m relishing that opportunity, if that is what it is,” Carse said.

“I opened the bowling during the one-day series against West Indies, and felt comfortable and confident. If that opportunity awaits, it’s something I’m looking forward to,” he added.

Both Woakes and Carse come into the XI in place of Sam Cook and Gus Atkinson, who featured in England’s recent series against Zimbabwe.

Another key decision saw vice-captain Ollie Pope retaining the number three position over youngster Jacob Bethell, despite Pope’s struggles in recent games at the top of the order.

England playing XI for first Test against India:

Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir.
