Centuries by Marizanne Kapp and Tazmin Brits helped South Africa successfully chase the target of 256 runs as they defeated Pakistan in the opening One Day International (ODI) of the series in Lahore on Tuesday.

South Africa were struggling earlier in their innings as Pakistan were holding them down to 43 for 2.

Sadia Iqbal took out Laura Wolvaardt in the second over, and Rameen Shamim dismissed Sune Luus on lbw in the tenth.

However, that was the only respite Pakistan got as the number four Kapp arrived to form a solid partnership with opener Brits. They took charge with the 216-run third-wicket stand that carried the visitors into a stable position.

Kapp scored a sensational unbeaten 121, marking her third ODI ton. On the other hand, Brits posted 101 not out, this was her fifth ODI century.

Kapp’s 121 eclipsed Sidra Amin’s effort for Pakistan.

The pair managed to hit 22 fours and two sixes.

Fatima Sana and Nashra Sandhu conceded 59 runs and 61 runs respectively in their ten overs.

Diana Baig was subjected to 56 runs in eight overs, whereas, Rameen was the most effective bowler for Pakistan, as she took a wicket and conceded only 29 runs in her spell of 10 overs.

Pakistan’s total of 255 for 4 was a decent one, and it was a result of a brilliant partnership between Amin and Muneeba Ali.

Amin, like Kapp, scored an unbeaten 121.

Amin and Ali scored a total of 147 runs for the second wicket; however, the latter fell for 76 in the 31st over.

Aliya Riaz came to the rescue with her 33 runs but was run out in the 43rd over.

Riaz’s exit proved to be a crucial loss for Pakistan as they failed to produce more runs.

Sana struggled to stay on the pitch as she scored only three runs, and the number six batter, Natalia Pervaiz, too, proved to be a weak link as she only managed to get five runs in 14 balls.

Ayabonga Khaka’s spell was the most impressive one from the South African side as she took the first two Pakistan wickets and had the stat of 2 for 36 in nine overs.

Tumi Sekhukhune took Sana’s wicket and was 1 for 37 in her overs, while Kapp conceded only 2.85 per over in her seven-over spell.
