The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) could face a major scheduling clash with the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2026, as it may be moved to May due to Bangladesh’s general elections, according to reports.

BPL chairman Mahbub Anam, speaking to the media on Thursday, revealed that the tournament may not take place in its usual December-January window. The change comes in the wake of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, which is scheduled for January-February and will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

PSL Season 11 and IPL 2026 are also expected to be played during the April-May window, raising the possibility of all three T20 leagues running at the same time.

“BPL slot may change due to the elections,” Mahbub said.

“BPL [could be] before December, or another slot is being planned. We will take the next steps depending on the government’s decision, and in this regard, May [window] is another option,” he added.

According to reports, the update came after an emergency board meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. It followed a directive from Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, who instructed all election-related preparations to be completed by December, with elections expected in early 2026.

Mahbub also confirmed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has invited Expressions of Interest (EOIs) to hire a sports marketing consultancy firm to manage the upcoming edition of the BPL.

“Agency with experience of organising international T20 leagues and have skilled officials will be appointed. In the past, responsibility was given to inexperienced companies, which harmed BCB, so experienced ones will be prioritised,” he said.

The newly appointed BPL chairman stressed the need to improve the league’s image and learn from previous mistakes.

“BPL needs to set up its own standard. In the past there were some mistakes and BCB needs to take the responsibility. We will try to increase the brand value of BPL,” he added.

Mahbub also said that several companies have expressed interest in joining the league’s new five-year cycle. However, BCB will only move forward after finalising a new financial model.

“Lot of companies are showing interest but they will be assessed only after the new financial model is finalised. BCB will try to communicate with the different corporate houses on their own,” he stated.

The board is also looking to expand BPL venues beyond the existing three cities – Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet.

“We will try to increase the number of venues. New venues will be added if they meet ICC standards and provide suitable accommodation for players,” he said.

“Bogura and Khulna stadiums have been sent for auditing. Work is ongoing at Barisal Stadium, which may also qualify for inclusion. The National Sports Council is working on Rajshahi as well. Among these four venues, the best ones that meet the criteria could be added to the upcoming BPL,” he concluded.
