Bangladesh Cricket Board president Aminul Islam got a reality check on Monday during his extensive discussion session with key personnel from the Game Development Department, the High Performance (HP) Unit, the Bangladesh Tigers Programme and the Bangladesh A Team.

The session, held at the BCB Headquarters in Mirpur, brought together coaches, trainers, physiotherapists and performance analysts actively involved in shaping the future of Bangladesh cricket through talent identification and structured player development.

The discussion focused on several key areas central to BCB’s long-term performance vision, including strategies for talent identification and nurturing high-potential players, setting measurable goals, designing and implementing performance programmes, and the role of analytical research and feedback in continuous improvement.

The framework and governance structure of the High Performance calendar were also touched upon with a view to optimizing scheduling, development goals, resource allocation and player workload management.

“He came and had an exchange of views with us. We are coaches, and he too is a kind of coach. He didn’t speak to us as the board president, but as a colleague. He shared with us the thoughts he gained from working with the ACC and ICC for 18 years. We talked about how we can improve further. We shared, and they did too. There were also people from grounds management. Discussions were held on how our infrastructure can be further developed,” Bangladesh A team head coach, Mizanur Rahman, told Cricbuzz on Monday.

“There should be a chain of command among all of us. In fact, there should be one, from the board president all the way down to the coaching staff, across every department,” he said.

Another coach added that they have informed the present BCB boss about their shortcomings quite frankly.

“The discussion was quite frank, like one of our coaches said that if he wants to work with a bowler, say a spinner, he can only comment on how much the ball is turning based on my naked eye like he can’t provide the right information. If we can’t even get the basics while working, how are we supposed to do our job?,” asked the coach.

“We are also far behind in sports science. We pointed that out, and he agreed. He said the things that can be done immediately will be done, and the process will begin for the rest.

“We don’t have the necessary technology. Say I’m working with a fast bowler and want to assess his biomechanics; how can I do that with just the naked eye? That requires a lab and many other tools,” he said.

“He didn’t say everything will be provided. He said he’ll try to arrange as much as possible. He doesn’t have much time, but he’ll try within that. We don’t even have a spin bowling machine, I heard one is on the way,” he said.

“We don’t have facilities, we don’t have proper grounds. Someone told Bulbul bhai that on the wickets we play, a bowler can get by without even developing his skills because the bowler knows where to bowl to get wickets or confuse the batter. So neither the bowler develops, nor does the batter. To this day, we haven’t received an answer as to why we don’t improve the wickets,” he said.

“He noted that down, and also noted the issues related to the grounds. He said he’ll look into the problems. Richards was there too, he said a lot of things, this and that.

BCB vice president Nazmul Abedin was also present during the meeting and contributed to the exchange of ideas.

The BCB President emphasized the importance of synergy across departments.

“The strength of our cricketing future lies in how well we align our efforts in developing talent. Today’s session was a critical step towards enhancing coordination and efficiency in our High Performance and development pathways,” said Aminul in a statement.

“It is vital that we continue to build on this momentum with clear goals, data-driven insights and a unified vision,” he added.

Open Dialogue, Shared Vision: BPL Players’ Mic Connects Stars and Stakeholders

Earlier, The BPL Governing Council of the BCB hosted a landmark open discussion session titled ‘BPL Players’ Mic’, bringing together some of the country’s most experienced cricketers for an honest and constructive exchange on the future of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20.

National stalwarts Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Md Mithun, Anamul Haque Bijoy, and Zakir Hasan joined the session in person, while Najmul Hossain Shanto participated via video call with BCB president Md Aminul Islam, BPL chairman Mahbubul Anam, BPL Secretary Nazmul Abedin and board directors and senior officials.

The cricketers shared first-hand insights on current challenges, potential improvements and ideas to further professionalize and globalize the league.

This initiative marks a significant step towards building a more inclusive and player-first structure for the BPL where decisions are shaped not just for the players, but with them.
