The high drama of the Asia Cup, played out over the last few days in Dubai and Lahore both on and off the field, may now shift to the boardroom when the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meets at the end of the month. The ACC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), which had been abruptly adjourned a couple of months ago in Dhaka, has now been rescheduled for September 30 in Dubai.

Coming as it does two days after the scheduled Asia Cup final, the ACC meeting, to be chaired by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) head Mohsin Naqvi, is expected to witness fireworks – both over issues arising from the ongoing championship and the unfinished business left pending at the July 24 meeting in Dhaka.

The agenda for the AGM has not yet been circulated, but the Asia Cup has already thrown up enough issues – the handshake controversy, the match referee imbroglio, and Pakistan’s pullout threat – for deliberations. Another controversy may also be waiting to erupt, depending, of course, on who wins the Asia Cup, who presents the trophy, and how the ceremony eventually pans out.

Who will attend from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may also be a factor. The Women’s ODI World Cup begins the same day in Guwahati, and BCCI members are, understandably, expected to be occupied with the inauguration. Much will hinge on who is nominated to represent the board at the ACC meeting.

That decision will be made two days earlier, at the BCCI’s own AGM in Mumbai on September 28. At present, Rajeev Shukla and Ashish Shelar are the designated BCCI representatives to the ACC. Both had attended the Dhaka meeting virtually.

The most important item on the September 30 agenda will be the election of the ACC vice-president. The matter was left unresolved in Dhaka after the BCCI had opposed the process. This time, the election will be taken up, with Mubashir Usmani, secretary general of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), expected to be a contender.

In view of the ACC AGM, the organisers of the ILT20 have postponed its auction. It was to happen in Dubai on September 30 and it has now been moved to October 1 and Dubai will remain the venue.
