Axar Patel is doing “fine” after suffering a blow to the head while fielding, India’s fielding coach T Dilip confirmed following the team’s 21-run win over Oman in Abu Dhabi.

In the 15th over, Axar was stationed at mid-off when a miscued shot from Hammad Mirza looped towards him. He ran to his left, fumbled twice and lost his balance while attempting a third grab. He was seen clutching the top of his head before walking off the field.

Axar did not return for the remainder of the innings and bowled just one over. Earlier, he had struck a quickfire 26 off 13 balls at No. 5, hitting three fours and a six.

India face Pakistan in under 48 hours in Dubai and it remains unclear whether Axar will be fit in time. The all-rounder provides vital balance to India’s line-up with his ability to float in the middle order. He also served as vice-captain in the home series against England earlier this year, which India won 4-1.

In the group-stage clash against Pakistan, Axar had claimed two wickets and played a key role in squeezing the flow of runs during the middle overs.
