All the key numbers from England’s dominant win over South Africa in Southampton on Sunday:

342 runs – the victory margin for England is now the biggest ever in ODI history, bettering India’s 317-run win against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram two years ago. South Africa’s previous biggest ODI defeat came last month against Australia at Mackay (by 276 runs), while England’s previous biggest win in the format was by 242 runs against Australia at Trent Bridge in 2018.

Biggest victory margins in ODIs (by runs)

Margin Team Opposition Venue, Year 342 runs England South Africa Southampton, 2025 317 runs India Sri Lanka Thiruvananthapuram, 2023 309 runs Australia Netherlands Delhi, 2023 304 runs Zimbabwe U.S.A. Harare, 2023 302 runs India Sri Lanka Wankhede, 2023

72 – is South Africa’s second-lowest all-out total in ODIs, only better than 69 against Australia in Sydney in 1993. This was the sixth time they were skittled out for a sub-100 total in the format.

20.5 overs is the second-least South Africa batted to be bowled out in an ODI, one ball better than at Old Trafford in 2022.

Lowest all-out totals for South Africa in ODIs

Score Overs Opponent Venue, Year 69 28 Australia Sydney, 1993 72 20.5 England Southampton, 2025 83 23 England Nottingham, 2008 83 20.4 England Manchester, 2022 83 27.1 India Eden Gardens, 2023 99 27.1 India Delhi, 2022

1is the lowest-ever aggregate for South Africa’s top three in an ODI; Aiden Markram and Wiaan Mulder were dismissed for ducks while Ryan Rickelton managed a single. The previous lowest was five – on two separate occasions – against Zimbabwe at Centurion in 1997 and against England at Old Trafford in 2022.

Overall, this was the 14th instance of the top-three collectively aggregating 0 or 1 in a Men’s ODI innings (all dismissals). There have been two instances of all three scoring ducks – both to Pakistan (against New Zealand at Edgbaston in 1983 and against Australia in Hobart in 1997)

7 is South Africa’s second-lowest score at the fall of the fourth wicket in an ODI; they’d been reduced to 6/4 by the same team at Old Trafford three years ago.

6 wickets lost by South Africa in the first 10 overs of their innings (24/6), the second-most for them in an ODI (where ball-by-ball data is available). They stood at 36/7 at that exact point against Afghanistan in Sharjah last year.

7 400-plus totals for England in ODIs, the joint second-most in the format alongside India and only one less than South Africa. Remarkably, each of England’s seven came post the 2015 World Cup, while all other teams have collectively managed just eight in the timeframe, South Africa’s three being the next best.

6sixes in the England innings is the second-lowest maximum tally in a team total of 400 in a Men’s ODI, only higher than three in Sri Lanka’s 443/9 against the Netherlands in Amstelveen in 2006.

Aged 21 years 319 days, Jacob Bethell became the second youngest to score an ODI hundred for England, after David Gower, who had got his first at 21y 55d against Pakistan at The Oval in 1978 and another at 21y 309d against Australia in Melbourne the following year.

0/95 by Nandre Burger is South Africa’s joint second-most expensive ODI spell in a list headed by Dale Steyn’s 2/96 against Australia in Durban in 2016.

Most runs conceded by a SA bowler in an ODI

Returns Overs Bowler Opponent Venue, Year 2/96 10 Dale Steyn Australia Durban, 2016 2/95 10 Wayne Parnell India Gwalior, 2010 0/95 10 Nandre Burger England Southampton, 2025 1/94 9.4 Marco Jansen India Eden Gardens, 2023 0/93 7 Wiaan Mulder Australia Mackay, 2025

80 runs conceded by Codi Yusuf made it the most expensive spell for a South Africa debutant in ODIs, surpassing Duanne Olivier’s 2/73 against Pakistan at Gqeberha in 2019.
