South Africa’s tour of Australia hit an early hurdle as off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen was reported for a suspect bowling action during the first one-day international (ODI) at Cazaly’s Stadium on Tuesday.

Match officials expressed concerns over the legality of Subrayen’s action after the 31-year-old delivered his full quota of ten overs on ODI debut. He also claimed a key wicket, dismissing Australia’s Travis Head, who was stumped while trying to step out of his crease.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Subrayen had earlier made his Test debut this year against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, where he impressed with four wickets in the first innings. He is now required to undergo an independent assessment of his action at an ICC-accredited testing centre.

This development adds to South Africa’s challenges, as they are already without pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada, who is missing the series due to injury.

Despite the setback, the Proteas started the ODI series on a winning note, defeating Australia in the opening game to take a 1-0 lead after losing the T20I series 2-1.

The next two ODIs will be played in Mackay on August 22 and 24.

South Africa squad for the ODI series against Australia:

Temba Bavuma (captain), Corbin Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Nandre Burger, Tony de Zorzi, Aiden Markram, Kwena Maphaka, Senuran Muthusamy, Keshav Maharaj, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Prenelan Subrayen.
