Anshul Kamboj is set to join the Indian squad in England as a back-up pacer. The right-arm seamer from Haryana has been called up in light of injury concerns to Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh.

Akash, the hero of India’s historic Edgbaston Test win, is said to be nursing an injury that could keep him out of the fourth Test in Manchester. The fast bowler, who knocked over Harry Brook in the second innings in Lord’s, was seen holding his hip and walking gingerly after bowling the 30th over of the England innings.

He then left the field as Shubman Gill turned to Mohammed Siraj to bowl in tandem with Jasprit Bumrah. Akash eventually returned to the field a little later, but did not bowl another over. He came out to bat towards the end of the day at three down as the night hawk and lasted 11 deliveries. Arshdeep meanwhile, is nursing a finger injury sustained in practice in Beckenham in the lead up to the first Test of the series.

Akash’s injury comes as a blow to India who are also attempting to manage Jasprit Bumrah’s workload on this tour, even as India’s assitant coach Ryan ten Doeschate hinted at keeping him on for the crucial fourth Test in Manchester. After an agonising loss at Lord’s, India have all to play for as they trail 2-1 in the five-Test series.

Kamboj, meanwhile, returns to the UK after an impressive showing for India A against England Lions in two outings before the start of the series. The fast bowler conceding at just a little more than three-an-over in two of the three innings he bowled more than 10 overs in. He picked up five wickets in the three innings while also scoring an unbeaten 51.
