Durham and Leicestershire remain in Vitality Blast quarter-final limbo after their North Group clash at the Banks Homes Riverside was abandoned without a ball bowled.

The two points suit Durham far more than they do Leicestershire.

Third-placed Durham – 30 points after 13 games – are likely to qualify for the last eight.

Fifth-placed Leicestershire, meanwhile – 26 from 13 – face an uphill battle to finish in the top four places. They must win their final-round clash with Yorkshire at the Uptonsteel County Ground, Grace Road on Friday evening and hope other results go their way.

Durham face an intriguing final-day home clash with second-placed Northamptonshire Steelbacks (32 points) on Friday evening.

The winners will definitely go through and clinch a home quarter-final with a top two finish. The losers may still qualify.

This was a double header Blast day at the Riverside, and both matches finished in No Results, starting with Durham’s women versus Surrey this afternoon.

As was the case with the women’s game, the men’s squads both warmed up before the rain hit with the toss approaching.

Umpires Michael Gough and David Millns called things off at 8.05pm, heralding the North Group’s first No Result of 2025.

Durham head coach Ryan Campbell said

“It’s a bit disappointing, but you can’t control the weather, unfortunately.

“The silver lining is that we’ve played such good cricket up to this point that we’re still in control of our own destiny. If you had to win your last two games, we’d be shattered. But, at the end of the day, on Friday it’s winner takes all (for a home quarter-final versus Northamptonshire).

“It’s brilliant. This competition, particularly the North Group, has been such a competitive affair. You’ve seen everyone beat everyone.
“Yorkshire beat Lancashire one day and then get beaten by a different team  two days later. That’s good for English Cricket and the competition. The more competitive the games are, the better the players are going to be, especially when they’re put under pressure.

“As a team, we’ve developed our strategies pretty well (in this season’s Blast). We’ve had guys play good cricket without being unbelievable. We’ve had such a good team effort all the way down the list, that’s been the exciting part.”

Leicestershire head coach Alfonso Thomas said

“Durham were never going to be in a rush to play, which is understandable.

“I think anybody who’s in their position would be the same. But, in saying that, I think it was taken out of their hands with the rain.

“It’s not ideal for us, but it gives us an outside chance (against Yorkshire on Friday).

“The one thing I’m looking for is that I don’t think we’ve played a game where we’ve been good in all three facets. Friday will be an ideal opportunity for us to do that in front of a home crowd in our last T20 of the group.
“If we come up on the right side of the result, then great.

“I probably would have liked to be playing a team which is still in it in terms of quarter-final qualification. That Yorkshire aren’t makes them really dangerous. They’re a quality side with a couple of match-winners and will come on Friday with nothing to lose.

“But we’ll concentrate on us, and hopefully we can execute all three facets.”
