Jofra Archer is all set to return to Test cricket as England confirmed their playing XI for the third Test against India, which begins on July 10 at Lord’s. This will be Archer’s first Test appearance in four-and-a-half years, with his last match in the format coming in February 2021.

The 30-year-old fast bowler replaces Josh Tongue in the only change to England’s side from the previous Test. Archer’s inclusion adds firepower to England’s bowling lineup, as he joins Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, and Shoaib Bashir in the attack.

Archer has played 13 Tests for England so far, taking 42 wickets, including three five-wicket hauls. He made his debut during the 2019 Ashes series and quickly became known for his pace and ability to trouble top batters.

England will be looking to bounce back after a heavy 336-run defeat in the second Test at Edgbaston, which saw India level the five-match series 1-1.

India, led by captain Shubman Gill, dominated the second Test with a massive first-innings total of 587, followed by a declaration at 427-6 in the second innings. Gill scored 269 and 161 in the match, guiding India to set England a daunting target of 608 runs.

Despite rain interruptions, England were bowled out for 271 on the final day. Mohammed Siraj claimed six wickets in the first innings, while Akash Deep grabbed six in the second to seal India’s win.

The third Test at the Home of Cricket promises to be crucial in the context of the series.

England playing XI for the third Test:

Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Shoaib Bashir.
