Records tumbled on Monday (July 7) morning as South Africa’s skipper Wiaan Mulder went to Lunch unbeaten on 367 on the second day of the second Test against Zimbabwe. However, South Africa declared during the break at 625/5, which meant Mulder finished 33 short of the highest ever individual score in Test cricket – Brian Lara’s 400* against England.

Mulder brought up his triple century in only 297 balls, becoming the second fastest to the mark after Virender Sehwag’s 278-ball effort against South Africa in 2008.

Mulder not only became the second South African after Hashim Amla to post a triple century, but also went past the former batter’s highest score of 311 to now hold the record of the highest individual score by a South African. Mulder went past Amla’s mark by drilling Blessing Muzarabani’s overpitched delivery for a boundary through cover.

The South African all-rounder also registered the record for the highest individual score in an away Test, surpassing Hanif Mohammad’s 337 against West Indies in 1958. He also went past Sanath Jayasuriya (340), Len Hutton (364) and Sir Garry Sobers (365) to currently occupy the fifth position among the best scores in Tests. Apart from Lara’s 400, Matthew Hayden’s 380, Brian Lara’s 375 and Mahela Jayawardene’s 374 are the other three scores ahead of Mulder’s 367.
