Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) chairman Mirwais Ashraf has confirmed that talks are underway to turn the upcoming T20I series between Pakistan and Afghanistan into a tri-nation series, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the third team and host.

Speaking to ACB Media, Ashraf said that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) suggested including UAE in the series, which was originally planned as a three-match bilateral contest between Pakistan and Afghanistan in August.

“A T20I series against Pakistan was scheduled for August, but they suggested adding another team, UAE, to the series,” Ashraf said.

“The tri-nation series will be helpful for us to prepare for the Asia Cup,” he added.

Ashraf welcomed the proposal and added that the ACB has no objection to UAE hosting the event. He emphasized that the focus is on giving the Afghan team valuable match practice ahead of the ACC Men’s Asia Cup, which is expected to take place later this year.

The PCB proposed the tri-series to make the most of the available window and offer all three sides competitive preparation ahead of major tournaments, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The UAE team, who recently beat Bangladesh 2-1 in a home T20I series, is being seen as an emerging side in international cricket. Their participation will bring more variety and provide a good challenge for both Pakistan and Afghanistan, especially in UAE’s neutral conditions that resemble those expected in the Asia Cup.

If finalised, the tri-nation series is likely to be held in August in the UAE. The official schedule and venue details are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
