West Indies bowled out Australia for 286 on the first day of the second Test. On a pitch with uneven bounce, Roston Chase lost the toss but the hosts struck early and controlled most of the day, except an expensive afternoon session which saw Alex Carey and Beau Webster put together a century stand and take Australia to a competitive total. West Indies openers came out to begin their reply, but bad light stopped play before a ball was bowled in the second innings.

Australia started well, with openers Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja putting on 47 runs but it was followed by the visitors losing quick wickets before Lunch. Khawaja was the first to go, trapped lbw by Alzarri Joseph for 16. In the next over, Konstas was dismissed for 25 when he edged Anderson Phillip to the keeper. Soon after, Steve Smith was out for 3, trying to pull Joseph but getting a top edge to long leg. Cameron Green looked solid for a while but was caught at gully off Jayden Seales for 26 just before lunch, leaving Australia at 93 for 4.

After the break, Travis Head added a few quick runs but was caught behind off Shamar Joseph for 29, with the third umpire confirming the low catch by Shai Hope. At 110 for 5, Australia were in trouble but Beau Webster and Alex Carey built a crucial 112-run stand. Carey was dropped once by Shai Hope but still managed a fluent 63 from 81 balls before mistiming a pull shot off Justin Greaves and offering a simple catch to Kraigg Brathwaite at mid-wicket. Webster held firm and scored 60 off 115 balls, but was run out while trying to take a second run to protect the tail.

The rest of the lower order could not add much. Pat Cummins was bowled by a ball that stayed low from Alzarri, and Mitchell Starc edged Seales to the keeper for 6. Nathan Lyon tried to hook a short ball but only managed to glove it to Shai Hope, giving Alzarri his fourth wicket.

Brief Scores: Australia 286 (Alex Carey 63, Beau Webster 60; Alzarri Joseph 4-61) v West Indies
