Indian batter undergoes successful surgery in Germany

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has undergone a successful surgery for a sports hernia in Munich, Germany. The 34-year-old batter shared the news with fans through a social media post, confirming that the procedure went smoothly and that he is now focused on his recovery.

“Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I was already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back,” Suryakumar wrote.

Suryakumar last played for India earlier this year in the T20I series against England. He then delivered a remarkable performance in IPL 2025, where he scored 717 runs in 16 innings for Mumbai Indians — the most ever by a non-opener in a single IPL season. He also set a world record by scoring 25 or more runs in 16 consecutive T20 innings.

Given India’s current schedule, Suryakumar decided to go ahead with the surgery during a break from international duties. He is not part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship series against England and hasn’t featured in ODIs since the 2023 World Cup final.

With India set to tour Bangladesh for a white-ball series starting August 17 — which includes three ODIs and three T20Is — the timing of the surgery allows Suryakumar a window to recover and get back in shape.

He took over as India’s T20I captain following their title-winning campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024. The team entered a new era under his leadership after the retirements of senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja.

If his recovery stays on track, Suryakumar is expected to return and lead the Indian T20I side later in August.
