The World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 began with Bangladesh facing Sri Lanka in their series opener at Galle. Meanwhile, two heavyweights — England and India — kickstarted their campaigns with the first Test of a five-match series at Headingley in Leeds.
England produced a remarkable performance in the series opener, chasing down their second-highest total in Test history — 371 runs — to register a five-wicket win. The victory was set up by a brilliant 149 from opener Ben Duckett and an unbeaten 53 by veteran Joe Root, who anchored the chase in the final session.
England had resumed the final day at 21/0 and went on to dominate the Indian bowlers. Duckett and Zak Crawley provided a strong opening stand of 188 before a few quick wickets gave India a brief chance. However, Root and Jamie Smith ensured there were no further hiccups as they guided the hosts to a memorable victory.
With this result, England climbed to the top of the WTC points table with 12 points and a perfect 100% points percentage (PCT). India, on the other hand, dropped to the bottom of the standings with zero points and a 0% PCT.
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, who played out a draw in their opening Test at Galle, are currently placed second and third respectively, each with four points and a PCT of 33.33%.
As it stands, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are currently contesting their second Test of the series. Bangladesh, after opted to bat, reached 71 for 2 at lunch on day one.
