A powerful batting display led by half-centuries for Ben McDermott, Matty Hurst and Keaton Jennings was supplemented by a polished bowling display as Lancashire claimed their first Vitality Blast win of the season at the second attempt at Nottinghamshire’s expense at Emirates Old Trafford.
Lancashire’s 208 for four saw Australian overseas McDermott top-score with 63 not out off 27 balls, Hurst add 57 off 40 and captain Jennings 51 off 31. McDermott and Hurst hit four sixes apiece, while Jennings became the fourth batter to total 2,000 T20 runs for his county and the fastest to that mark in terms of number of innings.
Dillon Pennington’s nought for 61 from three overs represented Nottinghamshire’s second most expensive T20 spell ever before the visitors were unable to build on a bright start with the bat and slipped to finish on 169 for nine, losing by 39 runs.
England fringe left-arm spinner Tom Hartley starred with four for 20 from 3.5 overs as Nottinghamshire lost their second successive North Group fixture.
Lancashire lost Michael Jones caught behind off Pakistani pacer Mohammad Ali 11 balls into the contest – eight for one – before Jennings and Hurst shared a quick-fire 97 in good batting conditions.
Hurst clattered Ali over wide long-on for his first six before Jennings hoisted Pennington’s seam over midwicket shortly afterwards as the Lightning moved to 40 for one in the fifth over.
That Pennington over cost 19, but Hurst also attacked against spin en-route to his highest all-format score of 2026.
Jennings and Hurst, however, will have been frustrated to both get to 50 and depart soon after.
Jennings went three balls after reaching his fifty, caught at long-off against George Linde’s left-arm spin. And when Hurst fell two balls after raising his bat in the next over – caught at long-on to Benny Howell’s seam – Lancashire were 117 for three in the 14th.
But McDermott maintained the momentum as Pennington conceded 23 off the 17th over, including two full-toss sixes.
McDermott reached his maiden Lightning fifty off 22 balls in the 19th, by which stage 200 loomed large. The last from Pennington also went for 19.
And that wasn’t the end of the run-scoring as Joe Clarke and George Munsey responded in kind.
They each hit a six in reaching 57 without loss after five, only for Clarke to be bowled by Hartley’s first ball as he completed the sixth over after Jack Blatherwick went down injured after bowling only one ball.
And when George Balderson struck twice in the eighth over with his seam, Lancashire had wrestled back control at 73 for three. Munsey miscued to wide mid-off for 37 before Tom Moores – with his cousin Joe in opposition – pulled to deep midwicket.
From there, Notts’ were quickly pushed out of contention.
Harry Singh, required to bowl his part-time off-spin following Blatherwick’s absence, had Jack Haynes caught at deep midwicket as the score fell to 85 for four in the 11th.
When Freddie McCann fell in identical fashion off Hartley with 105 on the board on the 14th, it was all but game over.
Hartley struck twice more to remove Joe Pocklington and Howell to render Pennington’s brisk unbeaten 37 a consolatory act.
