Gloucestershire Cricket is delighted to confirm that David Payne has committed his future to the club by signing a new two-year contract extension, securing his services through to the end of the 2028 season.

A pivotal member of Gloucestershire’s white ball setup, Payne has played an instrumental role in the team’s triumphs, including the 2015 Royal London One Day Cup and the 2024 Vitality T20 Blast. This new deal ensures he will continue to feature in Gloucestershire’s white ball campaigns, the formats in which he has consistently shone both at county level and on the international stage.

Payne enjoyed another successful season in 2025 for Gloucestershire, leading the bowling attack of the reigning Vitality T20 Blast champions with 17 wickets.

It was also a summer of milestones for Payne, as he made his 150th T20 appearance and took his 200th T20 wicket for the club. He also provided an unforgettable moment for cricket fans around the world, hitting a six to win the Pink 4 Syd fixture against Hampshire Hawks off the final ball.

Alongside his successes with Gloucestershire, Payne also impressed for Welsh Fire in the Hundred, taking 10 wickets and finishing joint eighth in this year’s wicket-taking charts.

Speaking on signing an extended white ball contract, Payne said:

“It’s always a very proud and pleasing moment to sign a contract extension, so I’m really chuffed to be able to continue my journey with the Glosters.”

“With the appointments of Jon Lewis and Tom Smith, it feels like it’s an exciting time to take the club in a positive direction, and I want to be around to try and help influence that”

Gloucestershire’s Head Coach Mark Alleyne said the following about Payne extending his stay at Gloucestershire:

“A Gloucestershire team with David Payne in it is great news in so many ways. His contributions are immense, and a player with that expertise and experience would make any County stronger.”

“A consummate professional; it is a privilege to have him leading the Glosters through some more Blast campaigns.”

“His bowling offering is probably more obvious to see, but he is much more than that.  Strong contributions across the Men’s and Women’s game are a testament to his dedication to the Club.”

“I look forward to continue working with him, of course, but equally the rest of the playing group will certainly be excited too.”

Since joining the Shire in 2009, the left-arm seamer has become one of the club’s most consistent performers, taking 210 T20 wickets, 115 List A wickets, and an impressive 328 in first-class cricket over his 16 seasons. During the club’s successful 2024 Vitality T20 Blast campaign, Payne was named Vitality Blast Player of the Year after finishing top of the PCA’s Most Valuable Player Rankings.

Last season, David also pursued coaching opportunities, serving as fast-bowling coach for the Gloucestershire Women’s team, working with players such as Alice Bird and Caitlin Belcher. In addition, Payne continues to represent Gloucestershire Cricket as the club’s PCA representative, a role he has held for several years.
